Shibori is a traditional Japanese fabric-dying technique, which can create complex and beautiful patterns by tying fabrics and dipping them in vats of indigo. In this workshop, you will learn about this dying process. The workshop will leave you with beautiful cloth, reminding you of a breezy summer day in deep blues and whites. Through folding, binding, wrapping, you will create a scarf and several samplers with various marks created by the wrapping methods. You may also bring other items to dye and create your own custom T-shirt, tote bag, etc.
Workshop Details
During the workshop, you’ll learn the basic principles and techniques for dying fabric using shibori techniques. We will provide scarves for dying, and you can bring other items to dye (natural fabrics work best). Note that you might get dye on the clothing you’re wearing and we will be outside (weather permitting), so please dress accordingly. We’ll have a midday break and will provide beverages and desert, but please do bring a lunch for yourself.
The workshop will be held at the Low Technology Institute (11927 West Highway 59) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on July 28. The workshop will be led by Kelly Larson. Kelly is a self-taught artist, who has been creating since childhood. She has been teaching fiber arts and sewing for eight years. Her work has also been in numerous art shows, galleries and shops. Kelly is the creative director of Living Arts Stuido, in St. Louis, Missouri. Kelly is the founder of Spirited Hands Art and the Women’s Art Collective, which is a group of women who create and share to help make our communities better through art. Kelly has had an art studio in St. Louis for eight years and, along with her son, founded the Turner Center for the Arts in June 2006. Kelly has a Bachelors of Science in Special Education and Sociology and has supported people with disabilities for over 30 years.
