In 2023 we are building a workshop on the Low Technology Institute property. We’ll have a series of workshops for people to learn timber framing, masonry, roofing, solar-panel installation, wattle-and-daub and plaster walls, and more.
One goal of this project is to highlight our Ten-Mile Building Challenge, where builders are tasked with constructing something using local materials.
We will also chronicle our build in a weekly series on YouTube. See the trailer below and subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss an episode.

Ways to Get Involved
We’re hoping to work with a variety of folks. Please get in touch with us at info@lowtechinstitute.org for more details.
- Volunteers: We’re looking for folks who want to get involved and spend time helping us in some aspect of this project, from physical labor to creating online resources.
- Students: Workshops are a great way to get hands-on experience with a skill and to be able to have a real back-and-forth with someone in person — we can only learn so much watching clips on YouTube!
- Trade Professionals: If you’re a professional and want to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. While our staff has experience, construction, masonry, roofing, etc. isn’t our full-time business, and students will benefit from your real-life experience. Depending on the nature of your involvement, some pay may be available.
- Comm. or Film Students: We are looking for a person or small group to film our project and help put together the weekly episodes.
- Philanthropic Organizations: This project has costs above that of a typical tiny-house construction project. Staff must put in hundreds of hours to offer reasonably priced classes, build in an experimental way, and put out free information and resources.
