POSTPONED: Upcoming Open House — Hand-Splitting Shingles, June 4, 2:00–4:00 p.m., Free

The following open house has been postponed due to insurance issues. Pardon the inconvenience.

Have you seen wooden shingles on houses? Are you curious about how they were made back before the industrial revolution? Come join us for an open house in our shop anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on June 4. Scott Johnson will host this free event at the Low Technology Institute (11927 West State Road 59).

You’ll see the entire process, from splitting the oak rounds into bolts, riving the bolts into rough shingles, and then dressing the shingles with a draw knife (the process is described in more detail in a previous blog post). Scott runs the Low Technology Institute and has been experimenting with nonindustrial technology since he was young. He comes from carpenters on both sides of his family.
