The (Triumphant?) Return of Hour-A-Day Gardening

April 4, 2022

Long-time readers of the LTI blog will remember that I used to track my gardening hours under the rubric of doing an hour a day through the growing season. My last post under this title was in late 2019, and I shelved this idea while we ran the Foodmageddon simulation in 2020–21 and then did … More The (Triumphant?) Return of Hour-A-Day Gardening

Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

August 15, 2019

The hour-per-day gardening project is through mid-summer. Daily temps have come down to the mid-80°Fs, and regular rain is back. The weeds seem to be winning the battle, even in the plot where I used cardboard sheet mulch. My theory is that the wet spring rotted the cardboard quickly and then the weeds were able … More Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

July 16, 2019

The hour-per-day gardening project slogs on through the heat. Daily temps are at least in the high 80°Fs, and we haven’t had any significant rain for weeks. The wet spring and now-hot-and-dry conditions have thrown the garden for a loop. The Neighbor’s Plot Next door, my corn is growing high and the amaranth is quickly … More Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

June 25, 2019

The hour-per-day gardening project continues. I have gotten busy in the garden over the last two weeks, but once one gets behind, it is hard to catch up, except where one has thought ahead and used cardboard as sheet mulch! The Neighbor’s Plot The peas, oats, and flax are doing well, with the peas already … More Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

Striving Towards Hour-Per-Day Gardening

June 11, 2019

The hour-per-day gardening project continues. It has been two months since my last update to this project. Unfortunately, I haven’t been as diligent as I’d like to have been, as the Sustainability Skill Share was coming up on June 1 and 2. Since then, it has been a busy time, getting starts transplanted in the … More Striving Towards Hour-Per-Day Gardening

Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

April 18, 2019

The hour-per-day gardening project continues. Spring is the busiest time of year, followed by fall harvesting. With the addition a part of our neighbor’s plot, we have more work and space than ever. It has been cool and a little wet, but dry enough to get some seeds in the ground. The Neighbor’s Plot This … More Hour-Per-Day Gardening Continues

One-Hour-Per-Day Gardening is Back

April 11, 2019

We have a big garden and try to grow an increasing percentage of our own food. We’ve still got potatoes and some canned vegetables from last year in the larder. People often comment on how large the garden is and how much work and time it must take to keep up, so again this year, … More One-Hour-Per-Day Gardening is Back

Last Weeks in One-Hour Gardening

July 12, 2018

The one-hour-a-day gardening project continues and my partner and I worked 11:00 hours in the last two weeks, bringing the season’s total average to 0:37, but some harvests (peas) are coming up and more beds need to be prepped. These last two weeks have been busy with picking raspberries and weeding beds, but frankly it … More Last Weeks in One-Hour Gardening

A quick translation of a German reel teasing folks who think wind turbines are ugly as we've gotten so used to other infrastructure that we just take in stride.
Our #compost study is keeping on, even in the winter.
#Butchering #chickens is not my favorite task, but having too many #roosters in a flock stresses all the birds out. It's nice to have this done and behind us for the year.
I do try and find time to put out more information on instagram, and I hope to do more in the new year. Thanks for the well wishes and same to you in the upcoming year.
Time to clean off the solar panels after a day of snow. Never mind that it's 28 below out here. There's sun!
It is amazing how differently toys are packaged in places like Germany, where they have stronger recycling laws. No plastic packaging!
